Cleveland’s Gallery M to Host Spring Show "Smooth/Striated" April 21-June 2

Exhibit to Feature Artists’ Talk and Closing Reception

Gallery M's Spring Show "Smooth/Striated" will run from April 21 through June 2.  On Friday, April 21, 2006 from 5 to 9 p.m., Gallery M will host a reception for its Spring show entitled “Smooth/Striated.”  Featured artists for this show will be cutting edge local metalsmiths Sofia Calderwood and Susan Skoczen.  The reception is free and open to the public.  Hors d’oeuvres will be served, along with locally-made, low-sulfite wine provided by Matt Cook’s nearby Studio of Five Rings.

Other events associated with the show include an artists’ talk – Calderwood and Skoczen discussing their one-of-a-kind, collectible metal artworks – on Saturday, April 22^nd at 1 p.m. at the gallery.  There will also be a closing reception on Friday, June 2 from 6-9 p.m.  Both of these additional events are free and open to the public.

These two rising stars create valuable, unique metal pieces that have been shown in regional, national and international exhibits.  Both artists have also taught at universities in the Cleveland/Akron area.

          Calderwood’s metal pieces were featured in Metalsmith magazine, which highlighted her utilization of unusual materials such as pipe cleaners, false eyelashes or earplugs.  Often, Calderwood incorporates seductive touches like perfumes and powders within her creations.  Light, fluffy pink touches add visual impact and allure to her smooth metal pieces.

          Skoczen, an MFA graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, currently teaches in the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Jewelry Department.  Skoczen’s brooches play with the concept of being able to wear an idea.  More structured, her pieces focus on breaking apart, creating lines, and expressing human interactions through the work.

Following the opening, the artists’ work will be on exhibit through Friday, June 2.  Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment.
