The beginning of a new year is good time to examine trends of the past and make predictions about the future. The new exhibition opening Jan. 16 through Feb. 17, 2007, at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art’s Emily Davis Gallery (Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St, Akron) at The University of Akron does just that with an intriguing collection of works entitled Cross Over: Combining Traditions, Metals & Sculpture.
Myers’ Associate Professor of Art, Kate Budd, and Assistant Professor Sherry Simms, collaborated in putting together the Cross Over exhibition as a way of commenting on current trends in the mediums of sculpture and metalsmithing. They are especially interested in the relationship between sculpture and metals, and how various artists’ current works demonstrate the merging of traditions from each genre. Budd and Simms will present a free public gallery talk on the exhibition, Wednesday, Jan. 24th, at 6 pm in Folk Hall following the exhibition’s opening reception which starts at 4:30 pm.
The Emily Davis Gallery at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art is free and open to the public. Hours are Mon, Tues, Fri, and Sat. from 10 am – 5 pm, Wed. & Thur. from 10 am – 9 pm; Closed Sunday. For more information, call 330-972-5951, or email dwatt@uakron.edu.
