Thoroughly Modern Millie February 28 - April 28, 2007 What made the twenties roar was dance! It wasn’t just a fad... it was a craze! People would literally dance until they dropped. Thoroughly Modern Millie has dancing on the mind, reminiscent of the dance marathons; Tap, the Charleston, Fox-trot and the Shimmy will take center stage! Laugh at the madcap, root for the love and enjoy the entertainment filled evening.
Millie Dillmount is determined to live a life of luxury by marrying wealthy. The spirited young gal leaves her small town of Salina, Kansas and heads to the bustling metropolis of New York City. Shedding her Sunday best for the city look, that of the defiant moderns (higher hemlines, hats and a new way of thinking), Millie enters into the city with enthusiasm... only to get mugged!
To her rescue is the witty Jimmy Smith, who advises her to return home. Millie will not admit to defeat and takes up residence at the Hotel Priscilla, owned by the mysterious and conniving Mrs. Meers (who pretends she’s Oriental). The hotel is a front for her real business, attempting to sell young single hopefuls into white slavery. Mrs. Meers counts on her unreliable and humorous Oriental henchmen (saving to bring their mama over from Hong Kong) to carry out the task, she does not count on them to fall in love. Miss Dorothy is her next dupe and the gleam in Ching Ho’s eye, but timing is everything and as hilarious ploy after hilarious ploy proves, timing is not on her side. Millie and Miss Dorothy, from opposite sides of the tracks, bond and quickly become steadfast friends.
Millie heads out to seek the man of her million dollar dreams. Her objective is to receive a job as a stenographer and marry the boss. A delighted Millie is hired by Trevor Graydon III to work for the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. Ready to paint the town red, she gathers the Priscilla girls and celebrates.
With fate at hand, Millie runs into jobless Jimmy Smith at the speakeasy and they share a dance. Jimmy becomes smitten, but does not have the financial means to fulfill Millie’s life’s ambition... but he does have the makings of love. Jimmy is ready to fight for Millie’s affection and although she resists at first, can she fight the real kind of love? Will her independent way of thinking get in the way of what she thinks is her original goal? Jimmy loves Millie, Ching Ho loves Miss Dorothy, Miss Dorothy loves Trevor Graydon III... How will the love triangles and subplots play out? Are they really who they say they are?
Thoroughly Modern Millie dances through the story of the moderns during the Roaring Twenties. Director/Choreographer Marc Robin returns for a story of hope, transition and love. Millie is the recipient of six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
