– For the first time, The University of Akron’s Mary Schiller Myers School of Art will present its Juried Student Exhibition at Summit Artspace in downtown Akron, March 16 – April 28. Each year, students are invited to submit work that is evaluated by an independent juror for display in the show. This year’s exhibition will be judged by Dr. Louis A. Zona, Executive Director of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. The exhibition will feature 75 works of art from 51 students selected from various areas of study including metalsmithing, photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design. Recognition will be awarded by the juror for Best of Show, 2nd and 3rd places, and honorable mention. The opening reception will be held from 5 – 7 pm on Friday, March 16th at Summit Artspace (140 East Market St.-corner of Market and Summit Streets). The exhibition and opening event are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, 12 – 5 pm.
The exhibition juror, Dr. Louis A. Zona, has been a professor of Art History at Youngstown State University since 1970, and has held his current position at the Butler since 1981. During his tenure, the museum has grown dramatically both in terms of its physical space and its collections. In 2000, The Butler Board of Trustees honored the museum’s director of twenty years by naming the new Beecher Center wing auditorium “Zona Auditorium”. Dr. Zona is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (Doctorate), Pittsburgh, PA, The University of Pittsburgh, (M.S.in Ed), and Youngstown State University (B.S. in Ed).
The Myers School of Art is excited about its first collaboration with Summit Artspace for the 2007 Juried Student Exhibition. As a result, the students’ work will have exposure to a different audience in this new venue. Summit Artspace is a project of the Akron Area Arts Alliance in cooperation with Summit County government. The gallery is located in a historic art deco building and is dedicated to displaying works by local artists. All exhibitions and parking are free and open to the public.
The Akron Area Arts Alliance is a non-profit advocacy group. Its membership includes 43 arts and cultural organizations plus 65 arts supporters. It is supported by the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Akron Community Foundation, Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation and Ohio Arts Council.
