John Pearson’s current work explores what he calls “the magic of metamorphosis.” Pearson is fascinated by the stages of growth and change that things go through. In Continuum, metamorphosis is explored through the manipulation of simple forms (currently derived from the forms of wildflower seeds), producing a multitude of variations that capture the magic of growth and transformation.

“I develop a huge number of forms that are ordered sequentially to simulate metamorphism. Basically I wanted to reveal this idea of transformation, growth, change, and it seemed like 100 was a large number. Once I started playing with the options, I worked through the calculations and quite quickly arrived at over 10,000 shapes. As I began working, my mind took over.

I’m very much interested in those facets of the human condition that are universal that everybody feels. We all feel kinship with certain things, and we have certain attachments. There are emotional attachments to those kinds of circumstances that don’t have an image. It’s not something that one could point to, like a tree or a landscape. But when one looks at the landscape, the things that make it beautiful, the things that make it compelling and attractive; these are the same things that are compelling and attractive to me within a work of art. They are intangible, they are indefinable. The atmosphere seems right, the light seems right, the time feels right, one’s mood is correct, and so on."
