Skywatchers and Monument Builders: Can We Connect Them?
Dr. N’omi Greber, Curator of Archeology The Hopewell people, who lived in southern Ohio some 2,000 years ago, were moved to build monumental earthen constructions that, viewed from above, formed recognizable shapes on the ground. Today, most of these have been altered or destroyed, but researchers have used a variety of sources to reconstruct original ground plans at some sites. More difficult to document is any astronomical knowledge that the Hopewell might have used to design these monuments. Dr. N’omi Greber discusses ongoing research comparing Newark and High Bank earthworks, sites containing combined circle-octagon designs some have said demonstrate astronomically significant alignments.
Tickets are: general public: $7 per lecture or $38 for the full series; Museum members: $5 per lecture or $27 for the full series. College students admitted free with valid ID. Note: These prices include a reception after the lecture to meet and ask the curator questions. Light refreshments will be served.
