Songbird migration is a spectacular phenomenon, a source of awe through the ages. Small birds flying thousands of miles are at the mercy of the environment. Weather and resource availability make every day and every night of migration a game of chance. How does a migrating songbird deal with the unpredictability of the real world? How is human activity changing the rules of the migration game? This talk will address the ecology and behavior of songbird migration and the challenges of protecting this amazing and dynamic phenomenon.
Sarah E. Mabey is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Hiram College. She earned her B.A. in Biology from Bryn Mawr College (PA), her M.S. in Zoology from the University of Maryland, and her Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has conducted extensive research related to songbird migration and conservation on three continents.
