Be on the lookout for early spring flowers and the spring-flying West Virginia White butterfly as you tour the Grand River Terraces Preserve in Ashtabula County. This fantastic preserve contains wooded ravines, hemlock swamps, managed old fields and mature floodplain forest that are home to five kinds of orchids, three species of mole salamander and more than 100 bird species. Afterward, enjoy lunch and a wine tasting at Debonné Vineyards in Madison.
Trips will be limited to 30 participants and will have three or four group leaders to make them more meaningful. Natural areas tours will start at 10 a.m. and end around noon. Afterward, participants will travel to the designated winery or private cottage for lunch and a wine tasting. Group leaders will recap the morning’s events and answer questions about the natural areas visited. Each trip is $35 per person. A bed-and-breakfast package will be available for those who wish to stay for the night. BONUS: Those who register and pay for all five trips in advance will receive a beautifully carved wooden walking stick.
For reservations and information contact Lauren Kelly and The Cleveland Museum of Natural History at 1-216-231-1177 or lkelly@cmnh.org.
