The First Saturday in May
Forty thousand thoroughbred horses are born each year; however, only 20 will make it to the gate to race in “the most exciting two minutes in sports” known as the Kentucky Derby. In THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY, we follow six leading, yet diverse, trainers as they struggle through months of grueling preparation to advance stake race after stake race to ultimately qualify for the 2006 Kentucky Derby. The film reaches past the glamour of the horses, the jockeys, and the bourbon; it gives us a glimpse of the owners, the trainers, and even their families to share the sweet victories, disappointing setbacks, and even gut-wrenching tragedies that define them. In this film it’s the colorful personalities of the people who train the horses that shine through. From Dan Hendricks (Brother Derek), whose life did not skip a beat when he became paralyzed from the chest-down after a motocross accident, returning from his injuries after six weeks to continue training his horses; to Kiaran McLaughlin (Jazil), who refuses to let a recent diagnose of Multiple Sclerosis get in the way of the training that he does for the Royal Family of the United Arab Emirates. And from Frank Amonte (Achilles of Troy), an assistant trainer for the past 20 years who is finally getting his lucky break as a first-time qualifier in the Derby; to the famous Michael Matz, leading his prized Barbaro to the 2006 Kentucky Derby victory, only to then see him shatter his leg at the Preakness. Wonderfully edited and paced, for those who are horse-racing lovers and for those who aren’t, THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY tells us a story that no Hollywood horse story can tell. Not Rated. 90 Mins.
