Vicki Blum Vigil, author of the book Cemeteries of Northeast Ohio http://www.grayco.com/cleveland/books/10258 will host a trolley tour of Cleveland’s little known cemeteries on Sunday May 4, 2008. Scheduled from 1:00- 4:00 pm, the tour will make stops at a cluster of small cemeteries on Cleveland’s southwest side. Although rich in history and natural beauty, these cemeteries are not familiar to many Clevelanders and include monuments and markers rarely visited or seen. Cemeteries from a variety of nationalities and religions have been selected, illustrating Cleveland’s diverse ethnic heritage.
The tour will begin at Lolly the Trolley public boarding station at the Powerhouse at Nautica on the West Bank of the Flats. It will then travel to five small cemeteries including the “Berger Cemetery” (Parma); True Loving Kindness Cemetery (Brooklyn); Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost Cemetery (Brooklyn), Jesuit Retreat House (Parma); Polish National Catholic Cemetery (Parma), and Worker’s Circle Cemetery (Parma).
As part of the tour, Vigil will share stories about some unique burial customs particular to these cemeteries, how area residents were able to get below rock and shale while digging graves, and how cemetery builders managed to preserve 50 acres of pristine greenery amidst acres of forest and trees over 200 years old. Simple headstones, graves inscribed in a variety of languages, a life-sized pieta statue, and stories of bloodshed, train accidents, and super heroes will be shared.
Cost of the trolley tour is $30. Copies of Vicki Vigil’s book, Cemeteries of Northeast Ohio, will be available for sale and for signing by the author. Space is limited and reservations are required. To reserve a spot, contact Trolley Tours of Cleveland http://www.lollytrolley.com/ 216-771-4484.
