SCHEHERAZADE The Cleveland Orchestra Hans Graf, conductor Desmond Hoebig, cello Liadov: Kikimora Dvořák: Cello Concerto Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
Austrian conductor Hans Graf, Music Director of the Houston Symphony, leads a delectably Romantic program of strings and storytelling. Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterful symphonic suite Scheherazade portrays the Arabian magic of One Thousand and One Nights — in which a domineering Sultan is ultimately bewitched by the wonderful tales of his wife Scheherazade, hauntingly portrayed as a sensuous melody for solo violin. The concert begins with the enchanting strains of Russian composer Liadov’s Kikomora, recounting the tale of a mischievous free spirit, and also features the Orchestra’s Principal Cello, Desmond Hoebig, as soloist in Dvořák’s soul-stirring Cello Concerto.
Concert Preview on May 8 & 10: "Lyricism & Drama", with speaker Rose Breckenridge, Cleveland Orchestra Music Study Groups administrator and lecturer, begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free for all concert ticket holders.
Concert sponsor: The Lubrizol Foundation
The Sunday, May 11 concert is part of the Musically Speaking series. The free Prelude Concert at 2:00 p.m., chamber music performed by members of The Cleveland Orchestra in Reinberger Chamber Hall, highlights connections about the music or composer of the main concert. At the main concert, you will hear experts speak briefly from the stage about the featured piece, its composer, or how the program was created.
Musically Speaking is supported by a grant from The Hershey Foundation.
