Severance Hall
SWAN LAKE The Cleveland Orchestra Osmo Vänskä, conductor Franklin Cohen, clarinet Sibelius: Symphony No. 3 Copland: Clarinet Concerto Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake (excerpts)
Cleveland favorite Osmo Vänskä returns to Severance Hall with a program of inspired and divergent sounds. The concert begins with a classically-informed work from Finland’s greatest composer, the majestic Third Symphony of Jean Sibelius. The Orchestra’s Principal Clarinet Franklin Cohen then stars as soloist in Aaron Copland’s jazz-infused Clarinet Concerto, written for and first performed by Benny Goodman. And after intermission, the magical sounds of Tchaikovsky’s first great ballet, Swan Lake, come to life under Vänskä's baton. Considered a failure when it premiered, this fairytale ballet conquered the world only after choreographer Marius Petipa refashioned the story and dance to match Tchaikovsky’s masterful music.
