Severance Hall
UCHIDA PLAYS BARTOK The Cleveland Orchestra Franz Welser-Möst, conductor Mitsuko Uchida, piano Mozart: Symphony No. 40, K. 550 Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3 Berg: Three Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 6
In a classic mixture of old and new, Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in a program featuring one of Mozart’s best loved symphonies alongside two divergent works from the 20th century. Mozart’s pensively exuberant Symphony No. 40, the second-to-the-last symphony he ever wrote, opens the concert with four movements of exquisitely crafted delight. After intermission, acclaimed pianist Mitsuko Uchida returns to Severance Hall as soloist in Béla Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto — the very last music that this great Hungarian composer created. Its contrasting three movements are filled with exciting apprehension, quietude, and joyful relief (at the end of World War II). The concert ends with a sonic sorbet by Alban Berg.
