The North Union Farmers Market will open its 2008 season at Shaker Square on Saturday morning April 12, with a blessing for a prosperous season, followed by the annual sheep shearing.
The Farmers Market will continue each Saturday morning through mid December.
This is their fourteenth year at the Square. Once again this year the Market will use the east and westbound lanes of Shaker Boulevard.
On opening day, after the blessing, our annual sheep shearing begins. It's a real attraction for youngsters. Jeff Baldwin, our sheepshearer, told stories to young and old alike, while he sheared his sheep. Another highlight was our Chef at the Market program. On opening day it featured Doug Katz from fire restaurant preparing a Spring breakfast sampler.
Local Farmers will unveil their fresh grown produce, bakers will present delicious artisan breads and pastries, and for the "cooking-challenged" there will be prepared foods created locally with an international flair. Fine artists and craftsmen round out the festive market Clevelanders have grown to love! As we look forward to planting our gardens, our Spring Flower Market of acclimatized plants grown in Ohio and ready to adapt to your garden, will be waiting for you.
A weekly highlight will be the Chef at the Market program, with local chefs and fantastic home cooks showing how to prepare spring dishes.
The Market is named for the North Union Shakers (1822 - 1889) whose land became the major part of Shaker Heights.
