Butterfly Magic May 22 - September 28, 2008 Open Daily
Butterfly Magic
Beauty in Motion at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
Hundreds of exotic butterflies fly freely amid colorful tropical plants and flowers in the Zoo's Public Greenhouse.
Butterflies native to Central and South America arrive weekly in chrysalis form (butterfly cocoon) from a butterfly sanctuary in Costa Rica. They hatch in a special chrysalis case inside the Public Greenhouse so Zoo visitors may witness the amazing transformation from chrysalis to butterfly.
Large and brightly colored, the exotic assortment of species includes the blue morpho, yellow apricot and pink cattle heart butterflies. Zoo visitors will also learn interesting butterfly facts (did you know that butterflies taste with their feet and that butterfly wings are actually transparent?) and information on butterfly conservation.
Currently, 24 species of butterflies and moths are listed as threatened or endangered in the United States. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Butterfly Conservation Initiative helps coordinate government and private agency conservation efforts. As a partner, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo supports butterfly conservation, education and recovery.
Butterfly Magic will be open daily from May 22 through September 28, 2008. It is free with regular Zoo admission.
