Lakeland Community College will take part in and host “Friends of Pangea Day” on Saturday, May 10 from 1:30 - 6 p.m. in rooms H-101 and H-1095. Pangea Day is a global, simultaneous event intended to bring the world together through powerful films and is the brainchild of 2006 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) prize winner Jehane Noujaim. The event is named in recognition of the landmass that existed when all the Earth’s continents where still connected as one. "Friends of Pangea Day" at Lakeland is free and open to the public.
“Using a vehicle of 24 independent, short films shown within a four-hour period, the founder’s hope is for the citizens of the world to start a movement toward understanding one another,” said Lakeland photography instructor Frank Prpic. “The same films will be broadcast at the same time throughout cities, towns, and villages around the world.”
According to the pangeaday.org Web site, the short films were selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over 100 countries and were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform, and help others to see the world through another person's eyes.
“This event sends a great message in that it seeks to bring the world together again as one,” said Mary Urbas, Lakeland Fine Art Gallery coordinator and Lakeland’s Friends of Pangea Day coordinator. “It is a great way to connect Lakeland and Northeast Ohio to the thousands of sites where Pangea Day events will be held. They are being held worldwide – in private homes and schools, in movie theaters, or coffee houses, basically any place people can gather and be inspired by humanity.”
The event will be broadcast in seven languages, and over 1,000 Pangea Day events worldwide will transmit photos, video, and text messages, to be incorporated in the live broadcast and the pangeaday.org web site. Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN's Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among the presenters taking part. The Pangea Day program will be broadcast live from six locations worldwide: Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro.
Lakeland’s Friends of Pangea Day is sponsored by the college’s Diversity Committee, Fine Arts Gallery, and the Center for International Education.

"These films have the ability to take you across borders. In a world where people are often divided by borders and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Movies alone can't change the world. But the people who watch them can.” ~ Pangea Day Founder Jehane Noujaim
