FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BITTERSWEET: NEW WORK BY MARGOT ECKE and SHELLY DiCELLO
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY MAY 9, 2008 6 – 9 P.M. Exhibition continues through June 14th
Artists Shelly DiCello and Margot Ecke investigate the practice of collecting, organizing, cataloguing, and archiving data within the framework of the fanciful landscape. DiCello presents an exterior space indicative of both a construction site and an emotive terrain. This is a landscape of desire and possibility, with collections of stacked bricks and lumber which allow an opportunity to rebuild and reconsider. The physical materials provide a metaphor for the process of psychological re-evaluation and development. The work's formal elements offer delicate yet physical mark-making that lends itself to a melancholy sense of unfinished or displaced place while allowing for a hopeful solution for growth and reconsideration. Ecke considers the notion of a constructed versus collected narrative. She presents a room that is reminiscent of an overstuffed Victorian parlor. The walls are covered with collections of photographs, portraits, and dexterity games. A side table holds a variety of small boxes, each containing a different artifact. This archive is an indicator of a life lived and observed. Viewers are encouraged to sit in the furniture, peek through the boxes, handle the artifacts, and play with the games. By doing so, they begin to construct a narrative of the collection and the collector. Shelly DiCello earned her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia where she teaches printmaking, papermaking and book arts. Recent exhibitions include Beautiful Dreamers; SPACES Gallery, Cleveland; and Multiple Voices in Contemporary Printmaking; Broad Street Gallery, Athens, Georgia.
Margot Ecke received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA from Cornell University. She received the Professional Printing Certificate from the Tamarind Institute at the University of New Mexico and a Certificate in Bookbinding at the North Bennett Street School in Boston. She is currently a professor of Book Arts and Printmaking at the University of Georgia. Her work is represented by Booklyn, a gallery and artists’ book dealer in Brooklyn, NY.
