Health Care Reform That’s Worthy of the American People

Sister Carol Keehan will provide background and context on the problems in the U.S. health care system and present the Catholic Health Association’s Vision For U.S. Health Care, a values-based roadmap for reform. She will also discuss the prospects for reform in the current political environment and the related challenges and opportunities as a new Administration and Congress begin work in 2009.

Keehan has worked in administrative and governance positions at hospitals sponsored by the Daughters of Charity for more than 35 years. Most recently, she was the board chair of Ascension Health's Sacred Heart Health System and served as president and CEO of Providence Hospital. In addition, Keehan has served in leadership positions at Sacred Heart Hospital in Maryland and Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital and Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center in Florida.

Keehan is a representative to the International Federation of Catholic Health Care Associations of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Health Care and has served on the several boards, including the Catholic Health Association of the United States; Catholic Healthcare Partners; St. Agnes Hospital; SOAR! Support Our Aging Religious; and Care First/Blue Cross of Maryland and the National Capital Area and its affiliate. Keehan currently serves on the boards of St. John’s University and the University of St. Thomas.

Keehan’s numerous awards and honors include the American Hospital Association's Trustee Award; The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross (Cross for the Church and Pontiff) bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI; American Cardinals’ Encouragement Award; Medal of Honor from the Archdiocese of Washington; and Friend of Children Award from Children’s National Medical Center.
