wayne1It is fitting that the series will begin with Wayne Henderson, who is not only a master guitarist, but also a master guitar maker. The 12-time Galax guitar champion has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Smithsonian Institution, in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar, for " America 's Reunion" during the 1992 presidential inauguration, and in seven nations in Asia . Last summer he performed for the Queen of England. Most often, though, he prefers to stay home, where he plays at his guitar shop and for local events.
The subject of the book Clapton’s Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument, he is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts. The 2005 book, by Allen St. John, outlined the process by which Henderson built a guitar for legendary guitarist Eric Clapton.
Wayne2He produces about 20 instruments a year. Doc Watson, who sometimes stops at Henderson 's shop in Rugby , Virginia (population seven), to play music with Henderson , owns a Henderson mandolin and guitar. Henderson’s instruments are extremely rare (and therefore valuable) as he builds every one himself by hand. As of October 2007, four hundred Henderson guitars have been constructed.
The Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition was established in 1995 to honor Henderson . A portion of the proceeds from the festival go into a scholarship fund to aid local young musicians in continuing their educations. The festival features local and regional bluegrass and old-time bands as well as Henderson and friends, and a different nationally recognized performer every year.

The Masters of Guitar series will highlight master musicians from around the US and beyond. Not limited to any genre, the series will showcase solo and duo guitarists in the styles of acoustic blues, Appalachian, bluegrass, classical, flamenco, Brazilian and jazz.
ROAM is dedicated to preserving and promoting an appreciation of American roots music and how it reflects the spirit and history of our country. Founded in 1999, ROAM provides teaching artists to K-12 classrooms to enrich not only music and social studies, but also language arts and literacy curriculum through live musical performance and hands-on activities, with long-term residencies and one-time assemblies. Each year, ROAM reaches more than 40,000 students in 36 school districts.
