Bobby Watson
bobby76One of the leading voices on the alto saxophone, Bobby Watson has had an illustrious career up to this point. A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Watson graduated from the University of Miami in the mid seventies. He left for New York City and was quickly picked up by the legendary drummer Art Blakey and his group the Jazz Messengers. Watson went on to become the musical director of the Messengers and remained with the group between 1977-1981. During that time a young trumpeter by the name of Wynton Marsalis joined the Messengers on Watson's recommendation.

In the early 80's Bobby Watson commenced his solo career and 26 albums later he is still going strong. Among his career highlights is the formation of the group Horizon which he co-lead with drummer Victor Lewis. This group is considered one of the most influential of the 80's and 90's and has reformed and recorded in 2004.

In addition to leading his own groups and recording prolifically, Watson has collaborated with numerous jazz legends including Max Roach, Louis Hayes, George Coleman, Branford Marsalis, and vocalists like Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, and Carmen Lundy. In short Bobby Watson works with the best and upholds the highest standards in jazz. Currently, Bobby Watson is the director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri/Kansas City and continues to tour the world and record regularly.
