This hilarious comedy—winner of the Camera d’Or for best first film at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival—takes place a few days before Christmas 2005 in a provincial Romanian town miles from the nation’s capital. On the 16th anniversary of the 12/22/89 uprising that toppled Ceauşescu (he abandoned the presidential palace at 12:08 pm), three locals—a pompous TV host, a drunken history teacher, and a 75-year-old crank who’s also the town’s perennial Santa Claus—discuss whether revolutionaries were at work in their town as well as in Bucharest, that fateful day. Of course they were, they say, though some of the show’s callers dispute the panelists’ self-serving claims. Subtitles. 35mm. 89 min.
