Dennis Nyback Presents
THE MORMON CHURCH EXPLAINS IT ALL TO YOU
USA, 1964-71, various directors
Tonight the Cinematheque welcomes fabled West Coast film collector and exhibitor Dennis Nyback, who will present two different programs of rare, funny short movies from his vast 16mm film collection. Though Nyback has run movie theatres on both coasts (Seattle, New York) and screened his films extensively in North America and Europe, this is his first appearance in Cleveland! The Mormon Church Explains It All to You is a jaw-dropping collection of short “educational” films produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the 1960s. Titles include Wetzel O. Whitaker’s Man’s Search for Happiness, perhaps the most widely-seen Mormon movie ever, produced for the 1964 New York World’s Fair; Whitaker’s How Do I Love Thee? (1965), a study of two college roommates, chaste Jan and promiscuous Penny; an excerpt from You Make the Difference (1967); and Scott Whitaker’s For Time or Eternity? (1969), in which a “pre-mortal soul” in heaven observes life (and marriage) on earth. Total approx. 91 min. www.dennisnybackfilms.com
Show Times May 23 (Fri) - 7:00PM
