Oliveira’s Buñuelian bent comes to the fore in this opulent opera film that slowly devolves into a surreal horror movie. Full of ghoulish details and grisly laughs, this 19th-century period piece tells of a beautiful young woman (Leonor Silveira, in her first of many Oliveira films) who forsakes a suitor for a mysterious viscount with lots of secrets (but no skeleton in the closet).
