BUFOR
Israel, 2007, Joseph Cedar
One of the five films nominated for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, this haunting drama about the futility of war focuses on a group of young Israeli soldiers defending a remote, mountaintop fort in Lebanon in 1980, at the end of Israel’s 18-year war with their neighbor. Knowing that they will soon evacuate this 12th-century fortress that they have occupied for almost two decades, the soldiers can’t help but wonder why they were there in the first place. They also hope they aren’t killed by Hezbollah rockets or mortar fire before they withdraw. “A war movie about a retreat, not a victory…A kind of Israeli Apocalypse Now.” –The L.A. Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 35mm. 125 min. www.kino.com
