DAY OF DESPAIR
O DIA DO DESESPERO
Portugal/France, 1992, Manoel de Oliveira
This exploration of the final days of Portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco is set in the house (now a museum) where he once lived—and where he killed himself in 1890. It’s a mixture of fiction and documentary that sheds light on the author of Doomed Love (which Oliveira adapted into one of his major films, showing on 6/11 & 18 at the Cleveland Museum of Art). Castelo Branco is also a character in Oliveira’s 1981 masterpiece Francisca (showing on 6/25 at the art museum). “A small masterpiece…Oliveira’s most spectral and phantasmagoric film.” –Randal Johnson. Cleveland premiere. New 35mm color print! Portuguese with subtitles. 75 min. Special admission $10, Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $7; no passes, radio winners, or twofers.
Show Times Jun 07 (Sat) - 5:30PM
