CUYAHOGA COUNTY DEDICATES WHISKEY ISLAND BRIDGE

CLEVELAND, OH - Celebrating River Day 2008, the Cuyahoga County Commissioners will dedicate the WHISKEY ISLAND BRIDGE to the citizens of Cuyahoga County for their access to and enjoyment of the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 3:00 pm.
The widening of the bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks improves public access to Whiskey Island Marina and Wendy Park where citizens can enjoy a natural Lake Erie shoreline, direct access to the Cuyahoga River, and stunning views of downtown Cleveland.
This bridge improvement is just one step towards improving access to Whiskey Island and supporting redevelopment of the Flats and the near west-side. Currently, plans are underway to complete the Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga County by constructing about six miles of trail and greenway from old Harvard Avenue to the proposed Canal Basin Park at downtown Cleveland. Further, a trail extension through the Flats to Whiskey Island ultimately ending at Lake Erie is also being planned.
Under the leadership of the Cuyahoga County Engineer, the Great Lakes Construction Company began work on the formerly one-lane bridge to Whiskey Island in October, 2007. The bridge was raised up in order to accommodate Norfolk Southern rail cars that serve the Port of Cleveland and widened to allow for two-way vehicular access. Further, a pedestrian / bicycle bridge was constructed in anticipation of a future trail between Edgewater Park and Whiskey Island.
Saturday will be the 18th annual River Day, sponsored by the Friends of the Crooked River. The bridge dedication will be just one of seventeen different events along the Cuyahoga River in Geauga, Portage, Summit and Cuyahoga counties.
The Whiskey Island Bridge will be officially dedicated at the west end of the new bridge. The bridge dedication ceremony will begin at 3:00 pm, but visitors should plan on arriving by 2:45 pm, as traffic over the bridge will be stopped at that time. (Parking will be available at Whiskey Island Marina). A ceremonial ribbon-cutting and a plaque unveiling will be part of the ceremony, and the Sunset Grille on Whiskey Island will be open to serve patrons after the event. Visitors may also wish to join other River Day visitors at the Coast Guard Station for presentations and discussion about the future of the building.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
