The Canton Museum of Art presents "Clyde Singer's America," from September 7, 2008 through January 7, 2009. One of the most celebrated and admired Ohio artists of the 20th century, Clyde Singer was born in Malvern, Ohio in 1908. Although Singer led a relatively quiet life, working in his later years as a Assistant Director at the Butler Institute and as an art reviewer for the Youngstown Vindicator, he created a large body of work which took its inspiration from the American way of life. Regarded as the “last great master of the Ashcan School” which included such notables as John Sloan, Robert Henri, and others, Clyde Singer captured the American pageant through paintings of all sizes ranging from large-scale city and country scenes to intimate observations of people in museums, waiting for the subway train, or chatty gatherings of men in bars. While Singer’s works are to be found in many Ohio art museum collections, some have found their way into prestigious collections such as the Philadelphia Academy, the San Diego Art Museum, and others. The Butler Institute of American Art and the Canton Museum of Art have what many consider his finest works. An even greater number of Clyde Singer paintings are in private and corporate collections. Singer produced a very large body of work totaling well over 3,000 paintings and drawings, with some estimates going as high as close to 4,000.
Hours are 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday; 1 pm to 5pm Sunday and 7pm to 9pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
