Since 1899, just 25 years after the first recorded playing of the sport in America, tennis tournaments have been staged in Cincinnati.
What once began as the Cincinnati Open in the 19th century is now the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters that is set for July 25 – August 3, 2008 at the Lindner Family Center in Mason, Ohio. The oldest tennis tournament in the U.S. still played in its original city, the annual Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) men’s event is one of nine prestigious Master Series tournaments, features a 56-player singles and 24-team doubles draws and offers a purse of more than $2.9 million. Reigning world No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland has captured two out of the last three singles titles, including last year over American star James Blake, while the Israeli team of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram won the doubles crown, besting American twins and world’s No. 1 doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan.
