Hip-Hop Reunion at Public Hall to Promote Education;
Stimulate Workforce Development
Under the banner Get Skills To Pay The Bills, Cleveland automotive products manufacturer D.A. Motorsports is producing an extraordinary educational event the weekend of June 20, 2008. The Wheels of Steel Weekend combines a successful Career Opportunities Showcase with an Old School reunion of radio talents from the former FM108WDMT and 93.1FM WZAK-all to draw attention to the acute need for a skilled workforce in Northeast Ohio. The clock is being turned back—waaay back—at Public Hall for the Clubstyle/Rappers Delight Reunion celebrating thirty years of Hip-Hop.
In DJ lingo, the Wheels of Steel are twin record turntables used to mix music, but the term applies equally to wheels on a vehicle. DJ platters and alloy rims are both produced using the advanced manufacturing methods of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machining. Although training for advanced manufacturing and the trades is the focus of the event, other technical and educational opportunities will be featured.
Students need to know they have a choice in their education and adults must be made aware of available retraining programs, says David Mallie, CEO of D.A. Motorsports. While 98% of his class attended college, the Beachwood graduate ended up on the factory floor. As a school-to-career kid, Mallie is committed to increasing enrollment at Max Hayes Career and Technical High School where graduates immediately enter the workforce. Max Hayes and its T.E.A.M. Academy teach the trades that build America including CNC machining, industrial welding, and construction and transportation technology.
Because it is difficult to excite students, parents, and adults about educational, job training, or career fairs, D.A. Motorsports conceived the Clubstyle/Rappers Delight Reunion as way to get thousands of people together to learn about available education options. The former B-boys who would throw down on cardboard, the DJs who rocked the 1s and 2s, and the MCs who would spit box on street corners are today’s parents, educators, trades people, and business and civic leaders.
Friday night June 20, 2008, the Clubstyle / Rappers Delight Reunion honors Northeast Ohio radio and club legends Lady Skill, Dangerous Dave Tolliver, Ralph Poole, Dean Rufus, Bud McFarland, DJ Centipede, the Master Kappa Mixers, the Supreme Team, Suave Gotti, Cool TLC, DJ Muff & Spoonie T, DJ Ice, DJ Ellery of Black Frost Entertainment, Silver B, and many more. With DJs scratching and crews poppin’ and lockin,’ Old School will rule. Add to the mix R&B sensation Holly Rae and up the ante with Chubb Rock—always a Cleveland favorite—along with Mr.44, Cha~Cha, D-Roof, Corrupt All Around and DJ Jack da Rippa of Sirius Satellite Radio, humble g, Low Key, Jus Mic, TuGun Cannon, Little Chico, The O, J-LinQ, Dex, Deep 3, and other independent artists covering Old School tracks. Then, the mastery of DJs Rob Swift, Total Eclipse, and DJ Precision of Ill Insanity leads into the world’s #1 turntablist, DJ Qbert.
In addition to increasing recruitment and awareness for Max Hayes High School, the Wheels of Steel Weekend is contributing proceeds to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland from any profits generated. It is hoped that the enthusiasm generated by the Wheels of Steel Weekend will last long after the last beats echo through Public Hall, and the deep roots of Cleveland Hip-Hop will send up new life.
