Live music will be front and center at the upcoming GroundWorks Dancetheater engagement at Cain Park’s Alma Theater, June 20 through 22. GroundWorks will partner with musicians Gustavo and Gaelyn Aguilar, Howie Smith and Nathan Douds presenting an exhilarating live dance and music performance.

GroundWorks’ fans are familiar with Gustavo Aguilar, the internationally renown percussionist, composer and improviser who has served as Composer-in-Residence with GroundWorks since 1998. Aguilar has collaborated with an impressive list of the most innovative composers of our time including Ana-Maria Avram, Chaya Czernowin, Anthony Davis, Iancu Dumitrescu, Julio Estrada, Art Jarvinen, Anne LeBaron, Annea Lockwood and Roger Reynolds.

Those familiar with Gaelyn Aguilar’s vocal talents may not be aware that she is also a cultural anthropologist, visual ethnographer and founder of Crooked River Productions a documentary production company. Gaelyn has collaborated with a number of modern dance choreographers, in the U.S. and abroad, has performed in the award-winning Korean Musical Myong Sung Whan Hu and has recorded for the Samsun/Ak and LG Music labels.

Gustavo and Gaelyn Aguilar will perform an original score for voice and marimba with the exotic duet Migration by artistic director David Shimotakahara. The premiere of Lights Up, choreographed by Shimotakahara, will feature the music of Gustavo Aguilar, Howie Smith and Nathan Douds.

A virtuoso saxophonist and composer, Smith has performed with Luciano Berio, Dee Dee Bridgewater, John Cage, The Cleveland Orchestra, Mark Dresser, Abraham Laboriel, Mike Nock, Elvis Presley and the Tone Road Ramblers as well as the big bands of Phil Wilson and Frank Mantooth. The recipient of two Fulbright grants, he was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize for Music in 1984, has twice served as co-chair of both the Jazz Fellowships and the Music Overview Panels of the National Endowment for the Arts and has been associated with Yamaha as an artist/clinician since 1971.

Douds is best known for his vast piano playing abilities which include jazz, pop, R&B, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, fifties, progressive rock, orchestral, chamber music, musical theater, electronic and electro-acoustic.
