Internationally known photojournalist Harry Benson will give the Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Lecture at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2008, in the Kent State University Student Center Ballroom. Benson's iconic photographs include numerous images of the Beatles, Martin Luther King Jr. and every president beginning with Eisenhower.
His hour-long lecture will be a retrospective, starting with Winston Churchill and going through present day, and will include many of his photographs that have captured the world's attention.
Benson's biography: Scottish-born photojournalist Harry Benson arrived in America with the Beatles in 1964 and knew he would stay. Benson has photographed every U.S. president from Eisenhower to George W. Bush; was feet away from Bobby Kennedy the night he was assassinated; in the room with Richard Nixon when he resigned; on the Civil Rights Meredith March with Martin Luther King, Jr.; next to Mrs. King at her husband’s funeral; on maneuvers with the IRA; and at the Berlin Wall when it went up and when it came down.
Benson was honored with a Doctor of Letters from the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in 2007. Twice named NPPA Magazine Photographer of the Year, he received the 2005 LUCIE Award for Lifetime Achievement in Portrait Photography; the 2005 AMERICAN PHOTO Magazine Award for Achievement in Photography; the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Scottish Press Photographers Association; and the Overseas Press Club Madeleine Dane Ross Award, and has twice received the Leica Medal of Excellence. He has had 40 gallery solo exhibitions and 12 books of his photographs published.
Benson, under contract to LIFE Magazine from 1970 to 2000, is presently under contract to Vanity Fair, and he photographs for Architectural Digest, Newsweek and The London Sunday Times Magazine, among others.
