FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ARTIST-IN RESIDENCE 2008 DON HARVEY: CITIES AND WALLS Monoprints, collage, artist’s books, installation
OPENING RECEPTION Friday, September 12, 2008 6 – 9 p.m. Exhibition continues through October 31st
This year’s Zygote Press Artist-in-Residence is Cleveland artist and educator Don Harvey who is well-known for his mixed-media art works and for his involvement in community-based and public art projects. His interest, and the subject of most of his works, is the city and the interrelationship of its environmental and social aspects. One aspect of the motivation for Cities and Walls is the mass-movement of populations within countries and globally, and, particularly, the heavy-handed attempts to restrain that movement such as the wall currently being constructed along our border with Mexico.
Harvey’s work was the subject of a 10 year survey at the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art (now MOCA Cleveland) in 2001 and he has had numerous one-person exhibitions at the William Busta Gallery. Collections in which his work is represented include the Cleveland Museum of Art; Progressive Corporation; Cleveland Clinic Foundation; University Hospitals of Cleveland; and the Robert Schiffler Collection, Dayton, OH.
Harvey is currently a visiting faculty member at Oberlin College, and previously taught for 27 years at the Myers School of Art of The University of Akron.
The A-I-R project is an annual event at Zygote Press where a selected regional artist whose work is not primarily in printmaking is chosen for a three month long residency at the workshop. With the assistance of Zygote member printmakers, the artist is introduced to various print techniques to create a new body of work for the first show of the fall season.
Zygote Press is a non-profit, artist-run fine art print cooperative located in Cleveland’s Art Quarter and is dedicated to creating active communications among artist-printmakers and increasing public awareness in contemporary printmaking. Zygote is supported by its resident artists, members, the Ohio Arts Council, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the George Gund Foundation.
Gallery Hours: Tuesdays 11 – 3; Saturdays 12 – 4 and by appointment
