In 2004, Atlanta-based artist Sheila Pree Bright began a series of forty photographs representing affluent African-American suburban homes around Atlanta. MOCA Cleveland’s exhibition, Sheila Pree Bright: Suburbia will feature thirteen mid-scale and large-scale photographs from this body of work. Portraying the rooms, furnishings, and partially-concealed residents of these homes, Bright emphasizes an upper-class African-American lifestyle that is often overlooked or disregarded in mainstream media. In addition to a social examination of race and place, Bright explores the racial assumptions that images of suburban wealth can evoke.
