Godfathers of Groove in the studio
Formerly known as The Masters of Groove, The Godfathers of Groove are Reuben Wilson on Hammond B-3, Grant Green, Jr. on guitar and Bernard Purdie on drums. For their appearance at Nighttown drummer J.T Lewis will be filling in for Bernard Purdie. They are a heavyweight trio to say the least. Reuben Wilson is one of the leading voices on jazz organ. He recorded several hit records in the sixties and seventies on labels like Blue Note and Groove Merchant. His musical collaborators have been some of the most important figures in jazz including Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Idris Muhammad, George Coleman, and Sam Rivers. Wilson has gained increased recognition in recent years with the Acid Jazz movement from Europe and the increased visibility of Soul Jazz and B-3 Organ sounds in the States. He has released a series of successful CD's in the past 10 years and continues to perform solo and with the Godfathers of Groove. His recent solo CD's are on the Savant label.
The youngest member of Godfathers of the Groove, Grant Green, Jr. is carrying on the legacy of his legendary father, jazz guitarist Grant Green. Besides his work with the Godfathers of the Groove, Green has released a highly successful solo CD and is in high demand as a session player and featured soloist in New York City. Besides being a first class guitarist, Grant Green Jr. is gaining increased recognition for his vocal abilities.
J.T. Lewis has played and recorded with a range of famous and noteworthy artists ...including: Ira Siegal, Omar Hakim, Stanley Jordan, Sting, Tina Turner, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Whitney Houston, Marc Anthony, Herbie Hancock, and Marianne Faithful. J.T. was the original drummer in Vernon Reed's Living Colour)...J.T.'s list of playing credits certainly speaks to his versatility as a musician and his love for all kinds of music. He has been the drummer for Vanessa Williams for the past 6 yrs. He has also been collaborating with "downtown musicians" Mark Ribot and Roy Nathanson on various projects...one involving Elvis Costello and Debbie Harry.J.T. is currently co- leader of the band Harriet Tubman with Melvin Gibbs on bass (Rollins band)...and Brandon Ross (Cassandra Wilson) on guitar.
The Godfathers of Groove released their latest CD in 2007 and will be performing material from that CD as well as their recently recorded one due out for release the end of this year.
