Gerald Cleaver Sextet Wednesday, Sept. 3 7 PM $15.
Gerald Cleaver, born and raised in Detroit, is a product of the city’s rich music tradition. Inspired by his father, drummer John Cleaver, he began playing the drums at an early age. He gained early experience with Detroit jazz masters Ali Muhammad Jackson, Lamont Hamilton, Earl Van Riper, and Pancho Hagood, the latter three of which may be heard, along with Cleaver on, A Night of Song, a compilation of live performances from the 1982 Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival. While attending the University of Michigan Cleaver was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Study Grant, to study with drummer Victor Lewis. He graduated in 1992 and began teaching in Detroit. He then began working with A. Spencer Barefield, Marcus Belgrave, Donald Walden, Wendell Harrison, and with visiting musicians Eddie Harris, Cecil Bridgewater, Dennis Rowland, Howard Johnson, Diana Krall, and Don Byron, among others. In 1995 he accepted an appointment as assistant professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Michigan, and in 1998 joined the jazz faculty at Michigan State University. Cleaver moved to New York in 1999. He has toured internationally with artists such as Franck Amsallem, Henry Threadgill, Rodney Whitaker, Kevin Mahogany, Charles Gayle, Jacky Terrasson, Muhal Richard Abrams. He has also performed with Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, Tim Berne, Ray Bryant, Ellery Eskelin, Andrea Parkins, and Marilyn Crispell.
Currently Gerald Cleaver is touring in support of his second CD on the Barcelona, Spain based label Fresh Sounds records. That CD, "Gerald Cleaver's Detroit" features many of the same musicians that are currently touring with him. Essentially the group is comprised of All-Star musicians from the Detroit and New York City areas.
Appearing at Nighttown with Gerald Cleaver will be trumpeter Duane Eubanks, saxophonists J.D. Allen and Andrew Bishop, pianist Ben Waltzer, and bassist Chris Lightcap.
Don't miss the dynamic drummer Gerald Cleaver and his Sextet live at Nighttown on Wednesday, September 3rd.
