Ravel and Prokofiev masterworks, with distinguished pianist Emanuela Friscioni
Suburban Symphony Orchestra begins its season with a concert that marks the passing of the great artist and SSO patron, Eunice Podis Weiskopf. The program presents music by two of the 20th century’s greatest orchestrators, Joseph-Maurice Ravel and Sergei Prokofiev. The concert is free and takes place Oct. 19 at 3:30PM in Beachwood HS Auditorium (25100 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood). SSO notes the passing of our great friend, pianist Eunice Podis Weiskopf. A legend in her time, she made more appearances with The Cleveland Orchestra than any other soloist, was Artist-in Residence with The Cleveland Institute of Music and a judge for the Casadesus International Piano Competition (now the Cleveland International Piano Competition). During the years when her husband Robert Weiskopf was conductor of the orchestra, they collaborated in presenting the greatest concerti in the repertoire. SSO is honored to have been graced by her talent, beauty and dedication. Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess opens the program in special memory of Eunice Podis Weiskopf. A Cleveland Institute of Music piano that the musician frequently used will be onstage, open but playerless, a visual demonstration of the loss of this light in the musical life of Cleveland. The program continues with another Ravel piece, Concerto for the Left Hand. Commissioned by pianist Paul Wittgenstein on recovering from the loss of his right arm during World War I, this masterwork is the most famous of many left hand piano pieces the pianist commissioned from prominent composers. Soloist for the work is distinguished pianist Emanuela Friscioni, founder/director of Classical Piano Performance Academy at Tri-C East. Closing selection for the concert is Prokofiev’s Suite #2 from Romeo and Juliet. An experienced composer of several ballets, Prokofiev exhibited a special affinity for ballet music. Young love and romantic passion, though not qualities usually associated with his work, have made Prokofiev’s ballet one of the most widely appreciated treatments of the Shakespearean story. The two excerpted orchestra suites have helped establish Romeo and Juliet as one of his most admired works.
