The new film from the Turkish-German director of the Felix Award-winning Head On is one of the major foreign films of the year. This sprawling, profoundly moving movie won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and the European Film Awards, and garnered four German Oscars (including Best Picture and Best Director). It explores the relationship between Germany and Turkey by chronicling the intersecting lives of six characters connected to both countries—among them, a widowed Turkish laborer in Germany and his grown, assimilated German son, and the father’s live-in lover, a middle-aged Turkish prostitute with a radical, college-student daughter back home.
