Guy Maddin’s “docu-fantasia” (his term) about his Manitoba hometown is a funny, wacky, nostalgic compendium of memory, myth, and imagination—a love-hate letter to the hockey-obsessed heartland that shaped him. Employing his trademark b&w, early-cinema style, Maddin re-stages strange scenes and stories from his childhood as surreal dreams summoned forth by his incantational narration.
