THE STORY OF A CHEAT
LE ROMAN D’UN TRICHEUR
France, 1936, Sacha Guitry
Robert Horton is a veteran Seattle-based teacher, lecturer, and film critic who has reviewed movies for newspapers, radio, the web, and Film Comment. Tonight he introduces and leads a discussion after one of his favorite films, a revered but rarely-revived masterwork by the witty French writer/director/actor Sacha Guitry. Guitry plays a thief and card sharp who recounts his disreputable career entirely through voiceover narration. His film is a pantomime that’s virtually devoid of dialogue; it also jumps between past and present (which influenced Resnais, Godard, and Truffaut.) “A masterpiece of wit, style and invention.” –The Holt Foreign Film Guide. Subtitles. 35mm. 85 min. Special admission $10, Cinematheque members & CIA staff $7, any student with I.D. $5; no passes, radio winners, or twofers. Special thanks to Jared Earley.
Show Times Oct 13 (Mon) - 7:00PM
