Stephen Kent - Solo Performance

March 19, 2017 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM

As a globally acclaimed player of the ancient Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo, multi-instrumentalist and composer Stephen Kent has pioneered its use in contemporary music across the globe for over 3 decades. Based in San Francisco, Kent has travelled the globe and collaborated with leading musicians including Airto Moreira (Brazil), Zakir Hussain (India), Habib Koité (Mali), Omar Sosa (Cuba), Leonard Eto (Japan), Choi Jong Sil (Korea), Steve Roach (USA), Doors drummer John Densmore, American Indian flute legend R. Carlos Nakai, and many more. He will perform with The Del Sol Quartet (USA) at the Akron Art Museum on March 18, 2017. His own band projects include the ecstatic sufi dance band Baraka Moon, "4th World" pioneers Trance Mission & the legendary Lights in a Fat City.

In February 2016 Stephen Kent celebrated the release of his 7th solo recording, The Painted Road – Stories for Didjeridu and Percussion, a recording of soul music performed and recorded solo which highlight the complexities and detail possible in this extraordinary instrument and emphasizes Kent's deep mastery of its contemporary voice. In The Painted Road Kent reconvenes with engineer/co-producer Alex Stahl who first worked with Kent in manifesting the first Trance Mission recordings in 1992/93 to produce over an hour of sublime music accompanied live by light hand percussion, shakers and a Zambian ngoma drum.

As a solo performer he is a virtual one-man-band, producing an extraordinary layering of sounds and grooves and creating an almost orchestral ambience with this primal instrument, accompanying himself on all kinds of shakers and hand percussion on musical journeys that travel deep into the heart of the earth.

"If you're skeptical about being swept away by someone blowing through a hollowed out tree branch you're in for a big surprise." San Francisco Weekly

Don't miss your chance to see this dynamic performer and storyteller, who invites the audience in on the journey, in an intimate setting.

Tickets are $15 in advance online and at the door. (When purchasing online, scroll to the bottom of the screen for event tickets.)
