In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble returns to the Cleveland Public Library for a program of rare treasures from China’s classical music heritage, including instrumental pieces and poetic songs from the Tang, Song, and Qing dynasties, some dating back over 1,000 years. Interspersed among the selections will be several classical poems about music, read in both Chinese and English translation.

The ensemble will perform on an array of instruments including dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), guan (double reed pipe), sheng (mouth organ), erhu (fiddle), sihu (4-string fiddle), yehu (coconut fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), qinqin (long-necked lute), and a variety of percussion. Joining the ensemble for this performance will be two special guests: guqin (7-string zither) soloist Ke Li (柯黎) and vocalist Zhang Wei (张维), both professors of musicology specializing in ancient Chinese music at China’s Jiangxi Normal University who are spending the 2017-2018 academic year as visiting scholars at Kent State University.

Named a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003, the guqin zither and its music have been handed down from the scholar-officials who have favored it as a means of self-cultivation for over 2000 years. Featuring a sophisticated technique and possessing a vast repertoire, the guqin is nevertheless rarely heard in the modern day, and Ke Li is the first professional player of this instrument to be in residence in Ohio.

Program:
