A Brave New Face

September 6, 2017 7PM to 9PM

Join us for an inspiring lecture and conversation with Teeba Furat Marlowe. In 2003, 19-month-old Teeba was riding in a taxi in Baghdad with her family when it struck an IED. The explosion killed her 3-year-old brother and severely burned Teeba’s head, face and hands. A journalist based in Baghdad published a story about the injured children in Iraq who needed to leave the country for multiple surgeries. One of the children he featured was Teeba, including a photo of her with sad and haunting eyes that captivated the heart of Barbara Marlowe from Northeast Ohio. Barbara began the process, fraught with red tape and a multitude of obstacles, of bringing Teeba to the U.S. She arrived one year to the day from the article’s publication, July 16, 2007, at the age of 5 years old. Through University Hospital’s Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Teeba has undergone 19 surgeries to replace her scarred skin.

Today, Teeba is 15 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a freshman in high school at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin. An A+ student, she placed in the top 1% in the state for Power of the Pen. She is a dancer and public speaker and looks forward to going to medical school to be a pediatric anesthesiologist—a goal inspired by her amazing journey.
