Visual Tales: Michelangelo Lovelace, Gail Newman, Paul W. Patton
Cleveland Artists Foundation
October 15, 2005 - January 02, 2006
CLEVELAND ARTISTS FOUNDATION (CAF) is hosting a unique exhibit entitled Visual Tales: Paintings by Michelangelo Lovelace, Gail Newman, and Paul W. Patton from October 15, 2005 to January 2, 2006. In the exhibit, composed of approximately 50 paintings and sculptures, three Cleveland artists from diverse backgrounds tell their own personal life experiences. Paul W. Patton recalls his boyhood growing up in rural Ohio in a style akin to Grandma Moses. Michelangelo Lovelace conveys his life in the inner city in emotionally charged images. Gail Newman explores her early years and her passage into adulthood in narratives veiled in symbols. None of the artists had a systematic formal art training. They don't follow any contemporary trends. Their work looks much like what we call contemporary folk art. Their paintings create a dynamic interaction and convey fun, whimsy, sadness, and outrage in a show that is colorful, thought-provoking, and richly satisfying. Curators: Gloria Plevin and Rotraud Sackerlotzky. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 1:00pm-5:00pm.
