The Christmas season is a time to share home and hearth and exchange gifts. During the holidays, many community projects gather gifts to make dreams of children come true. But what about forgotten seniors?
A new holiday program, which aims to become an annual event throughout North America, combines the traditions of bringing people together and gift giving to reach out to seniors who have no family in the area and whose holidays would otherwise be bleak. It is the Be a Santa to a Senior program sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care.
Home Instead Senior Care will be working with other organizations including non-profit agencies that provide names and wish lists of needy seniors – to local merchants who put Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas trees in their stores – to shoppers who purchase gifts for those seniors – and, finally, to the volunteers who wrap and distribute the gifts, this program truly embodies the spirit of Christmas.
Last year, a non-profit Community Outreach group worked with one of the Texas Home Instead Senior Care offices to really make a difference in the lives of their local needy seniors.
Many seniors don’t have families or their kids have moved away. You talk about the forgotten generation. This is it. The Be a Santa to a Senior program is a wonderful way for people to come together to make seniors’ wishes come true.
“In addition to providing gifts, Be a Santa to a Senior offers human contact and social interaction for seniors who are unlikely to have family or guest visit during the holidays,” said Home Instead Senior Care Founder Paul Hogan. And the resulting smiles, memories and feelings of satisfaction are priceless.
Please contact us if you are interested in participating. We have lots of opportunity to volunteer and help make a difference in the lives of local seniors. We’ll need help with gift pick-up and distribution, we need local merchants and restaurants to display a tree or use a lock box and we need lots of help wrapping! Our wrapping event will be held Thursday, December 8th from 11 – 8. Gift distribution will begin Wednesday, December 14th. For more information, please call our office at 440-914-1400.
