CHARENTON THEATER COMPANY ANNOUNCES THEIR FALL TOUR:
PETER NICHOLS’ A DAY IN THE DEATH OF JOE EGG

November 17, 2005 - December 10, 2005

"Both moving and funny" - New York Post

"This unforgettable play still shocks, delights, and provokes debate!" - London Times

Charenton Theater Company is proud to announce their Fall Tour production, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, written by Peter Nichols and directed by Sarah May. This savage comedy-drama follows a couple as they raise their severely handicapped daughter, and the play penetrates deep with the effects this has on marriage, careers, and family. As they try to make light of their situation, parents Bri and Shelia resort to humor and fantasy as a way to get through each day. The production opens November 17, 2005 and runs through December 10. Tour locations include St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Solon Center for the Arts, Headfooters Outsider Art Gallery, Spaces Gallery, Lake Erie College and Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ. As is tradition with Charenton, all performances are free admission, and donations are gratefully accepted.

Charenton will close its 2005 season by reuniting award-winning Six Degrees of Separation director May with actors Jacqi Loewy (also Charenton’s artistic director) and Jeffrey Grover in this production. This immensely moving, profound and funny play about love and marriage centers around a family's struggle to cope with and raise their only child, the title character, a severely handicapped girl with whom they cannot communicate. The play, in its wonderfully theatrical style, also explores the well-meaning friends and family in their response to the handicapped daughter and the parents who love and nurture her. It is a scorching, unruly and darkly comic dramatization of the effect of tragedy on a marriage and it breached several taboos in the late 1960's. A successful recent Broadway revival starred British comedian and actor Eddie Izzard.
