Ronald McDonald Family Room
Volunteer Position
The Ronald McDonald Family Room is an extension of the services Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland provides. The Family Room is a special place within the hospital, near the intensive care units, where families can relax and “getaway” while still being close to their child.
The role of the Family Room volunteer is to staff the Room, uphold all Family Room and hospital policies and be supportive to the families who use the Room. The Volunteer’s part is crucial to maintaining the friendly, caring atmosphere of the Family Room.
Currently, the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland operates two Family Rooms, immediate volunteer opportunities are available at:
• University Hospital’s Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital
• The Children's Hospital at the Cleveland Clinic
In 2009, additional Family Room will be opened and volunteer opportunities will be available at:
• Fairview Hospital
• MetroHealth
Specific responsibilities of a Family Room volunteer include:
• Register new visitors and orient guests to the Family Room
• Answer telephones
• Keep simple statistical records
• Enforce policies when needed and offer resources to families
• Keep the room neat and tidy
• Help provide a warm, friendly and supportive atmosphere for families
The job qualifications required of a Family Room volunteer are:
• Ability to interact and communicate well with families and staff
• Record keeping ability
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products
• Ability to work effectively with other volunteers
• Demonstrate responsibility to uphold Family Room policies
• Good listening skills
• Some lifting of supplies may be necessary
• Able to lift or move supplies for the Room
• Perform other duties related to the Family room as assigned
The time commitment is flexible for a variety of schedules:
• 3 or 4 hour shifts once weekly or bi-weekly
• Minimum 50 hour commitment over a six month period
