June 03, 2005        Ever since we first visited the Middle Eastern Restaurant's Bolivar location (before its move to the current Prospect Avenue site in 1972), the eatery has felt like home. Eddie Khouri opened the original location in 1961, and chef Josephine Abraham lent maternal warmth that extended beyond the kitchen until she retired in 1984. Khouri's nephew, Lee George, took over the restaurant in December 2003 and expanded its hours; happily, everything else is the same, including the lemony dressing that turns humble iceberg into a taste treat. The Middle Eastern also boasts the best baba ghanoush in Cleveland, its texture and fragrant smokiness contrasting with the eggplant. Many of the vegetarian dishes meet the limitations of the South Beach Diet (whole wheat pita is available upon request), and Atkins devotees can enjoy lamb, chicken and beef preparations. Review By:
