good hunky food
Good, good hungarian chow. Do not eat for 12 hours before you visit. It's heavy cuisine. None of the servers are cheerful. No one waiting on you smiles or seems happy to see you. This seems odd and I've experienced this all three times I've been here. But it's good parikash, goulash, and nokedlee. The strudel is magnificent.

Hungarian Excellence
This Hungarian restaurant was top notch and first rate. My friend raved about her cabbage rolls. I ordered the Weiner Schnitzel(tough decision between that, the paprikashs, and the goulashs). It was $20.95 for the regular size, and even with my appetite I should have ordered the take-home box along with the food. The service was excellent and the food came out at light speed. Homey atmosphere (suiting the food) and very clean.

In its current Shaker Square location, and in a previous spot on Buckeye Road, Balaton has served fine Hungarian food since 1964. But the atmosphere nods to a time further back, with colorful embroidery and historical engravings of Hungarian cities brightening the cream-colored dining room. The food, which earned Bon Appetit's Best Hungarian vote in 1995, does the Old Country proud: potato pancakes, crisp and assertively seasoned with onion, garlic and parsley; the tasty Hungarian summer stew, lecso, made with sweet and hot peppers and tomatoes (and full of egg-rich, tiny yellow dumplings that act as sauce-soaking sponges); and Wiener schnitzel, a huge, paper-thin serving of veal surrounded by a crumb coating. For dessert, try the excellent housemade crÉpes - poppy-seed-rich and not too sweet - or the chestnut cream torte, which arrives iced with a glorious buttercream. Beer and wine (including wine from Hungary) are available.
