Don't waste your time

Mediocre food and HORRIBLE service. As soon as we walked in we fealt rushed. When I assume it was the busboy that took our drink order (he was wearing an aprob covered in food holding a bucket of dishes) came over to the table he had no smile whatsoever. The two young ones ordered some cokes, my aunt ordered a glass of wine and my mom a water. We had literally just sat down at our table so i didn't have much time to think. i asked if they had a specific type of beer and got a quick "no". He didn't let me know what they did have or explain their selection but proceded to just point to some dusty bottle above the bar. "That's what we got" was the help I was given in deciding. i fealt even more rushed and he looked angry so I said "I may need a minute to decide". He proceded to stand there and stare at me until I gave him answer. I spouted out the first thing I saw that I remotely liked and he walked away without another word. When he came back with the drinks the cokes were obviously filled too full and when he put them one the table in front of the two little girls he says "Dont spill these". I was in shock. Who does this guy think he is? All this time we still havent met our waitress. Finally a woman comes to the table and without introduction shoots righ to "Are you ready to order". What are these people in such a hurry for? We order and after way too long she comes back to tell us they were out of what we had ordered. In a restaurant that seems like theyre in a hurry to get us out, youd think they would have told us sooner. Im a vegetarian and there are NO VEGETARIAN OPTIONS besides a couple starters (not an exageration) I was forced to eat a hummus appetizer that was clearly store bought, disgusting, and over priced. The waitress never came to check on our table. If she was busy I would have understood but she was standing in a corner chatting it up with another waitress. Our drinks were never refilled and when my aunt realized that they had forgotten to bring her coleslaw with her sandwich that came with it we tried to get attention clearly being ignored to the point where I had to shout out a firm "EXCUSE ME" just to get this woman to the table. When my aunt explained that she hadnt gotten the coleslaw that was supposed to come with her meal without the slightest appology proceeded to say "Oh yeah, they were making more and I forgot" ....really lady? This is your appology? She brought the coleslaw over, said she'd FINALLY be back with some water and when she was walking away she licked away some coleslaw she had gotten on her hand. SHE LICKED HER HAND. At this point were just trying to get as far away from this place as possible. We had tickets to a show at Playhouse Square and came to this restaurant besides its right around the corner. This alone schocked us that there isnt a nicer place in their spot. The decor was horrible and not nearly what we thought it would be when we walked into a restauant near Playhouse Square. This place was just a dirty diner and dont get me wrong, I could care less about how a place looks if they have the food to makeup for it. Anyway, to end this horror story she brought our check. All on one, even though we needec it split but decided to just get out and worry about it later. She puts the check on the table and my mom says let me just give you it now and pulls her card out. Right as shes doing this the waitress says "Ok...as she turns her back and WALKS OVER TO THE NEXT TABLE WITHOUT IT!" Yes she comes back shortly after giving them ketchup but c'mon! This was the dinner from hell. I'm sorry we've inconvenienced you with our sitting and wanting to eat... Waste of money...waste of time.

Casual Dining, Good Food, Reasonably Priced, Close to Theaters

I do not understand all the bad reviews. Do not listen to those bad reviews and deny yourself the chance to eat at this establishment. In June 2012, I ate lunch on two different days at Otto Moser's and the place was great. Keep in mind this is for "casual dining". They mostly have sandwiches on the menu. The tables were not crowded together as someone else mentioned and the service was really good -- delivered to the table super-fast. I had a Reuben Sandwich during my first visit for lunch and I had the Tuna Salad on my second visit. They were both very good. They were large portions. The ice tea was fresh-brewed and tasted great and was refilled without asking. The waitress was extremely friendly and quite funny. The price was very reasonable. I plan to see Mamma Mia at the Palace (July 2012) and I am planning to eat at Otto Moser's before the show.

Gone Downhill?

It's been a bit of a little tradition with my family to go to Otto Moser's every time we go to a play downtown, which isn't as often as we'd like. At first, the place was amazing. (It was before a 'Beatles Tribute 1964' concert) They had a huge menu, and the food and service was amazing. I had chicken topped with mango salsa and buttered redskin potatoes on the side. My dad had open faced pot roast of rye bread. Neither were dry, and their desserts were delicious. It was always packed every time we went. I hadn't gone in years, and I went to go see 'Hair' and wanted to go back for old time's sake. The tables were all crowded together, we had friendly (but bad) service, and the menu went from three page ordeal to a paper, front-and-back. I had chicken with cheese sauce, and it was dry. We waited around forever for the food to arrive, and our appetizer was definitely...lacking. For all these bad reviews, I just wanted to point out that it wasn't always as bad as it is now. I want to say the economy is killing it, but it used to be my absolute favorite restaurant downtown. (my rating is for the second and most recent time I went)

No Reservations

Absolutely nothing about Otto Moser's warrants an encore. When you enter, you're in the center of the dining area facing the bar. There is no podium or greeter, so we did not know if we needed to seat ourselves or wait for a hostess. A frowning gentlemen finally approached and asked "reservations?", to which we answered "no reservations". He proceeded to mumble "everyone's living on the edge tonight". Both sides of the dining area we're half empty. We ordered the chicken special @ $14.95, which was burned on one side, and dry enough inside to disintegrate in your mouth like dust. After paying the bill, we asked for a manager in order to give him constructive criticism. Guess who? Frowning, mumbling greeter guy is an owner! He didn't have much to say, other than he'd talk to someone. He started to walk away and then stopped and offered to "knock something off the bill". We told him it was already paid, and left. Jeers, not cheers for this establishment!

Great place

I was at Otto Moser's with a friend a few nights ago, and the entire experience was great. The sandwich pricing is extremeley reasonable and I'd be hard pressed to think you can find a less expensive turkey or corned beef sandwich anywhere. Tasty too! The abiance is great if you're in to the old time scenery, which I am. The old style bar, paintings from the turn of the 20th century, and woodwork totally makes you feel like your in the roaring 20's! My kind of place for sure...

What no lunch!!

I took my son today. We were waited on promptly. However, it took at least 35-40 minutes and we still did not receive our food. The waitress said she did not know where our order was. In the meantime, patrons coming in after we did we getting there food. I told the server I had to leave because I had to get back to work. Her response was "OK, I'll just mark the ticket as a walk-off". Also, other servers were hesitant to go into the kitchen because they were being yelled at when they were only checking the status of their order. I work downtown and have made a point of going to a different restaurant every week. This is by far the worst service I received. If zeroes were part of your rating system, this establishment would receive them from me. The owner of this restaurant should be ashamed of the service provided.

Something Different

I have eaten here several times over the last five years that I have been a member of Playhouse Square. Every time I eat here it is a little different, but somethings remain the same. The food is always good, service can be spotty if there isn't much going on in the theaters they seem to not have quite enough help sometimes. But I've never waited too long if I tell them I need to be out of there on time. The Ambiance it old world and quite homey to me. Everyone is always friendly when I am there. It is much more down to earth with the pricing then many of the other resterants in the area.

Perfectly happy

My daughter and I stopped in after a Sat afternoon showing of Wicked. We were seated immediately and waited on immediately. In fact, three waiters stopped by at different times to take our drink orders. I had a delicious burger and my daughter had steak. The steak tasted good but was not the best in tenderness, etc. However we were not in a steak house so it was as expected. The burger was good. Sides for both were good. They have the best coleslaw! Everyone was friendly. Our experience was very good. We would go there again in a heartbeat.

always been good

I've eaten here a number of times and have always had a pleasent experience and good food. I've ordered the corned beef sandwhich and the club both of which were very good. The server was friendly but slow so get there early if you are going to a show. The atmosphere is that of a typical deli/bar.

Never Again

Two weeks ago I was at Playhouse Square to see "Gone with the Wind" with my mom and sister. We were killing time before the movie, looking around and saw Otto Moser's. We were intrigued, but not hungry. Last night, we went back to Playhouse Square to see "West Side Story" and decided to grab a bite at the restaurant. When we got there, we had to seat ourselves and after sitting at the table for about 10 minutes, the waitress finally came over and asked us what we wanted. We didn't even have menus at that point, so we asked her if she could bring us a menu. 10 minutes later, she comes back with a piece of paper. The choices were pretty meager. Appetizers included chicken tenders, cheese sticks, crab cakes and a soup of the day. There were a couple of salad choices and a few entrees including a chicken sandwich, burger and some fish. Nothing that didn't include meat, so if you are a vegetarian, you might want to try someplace else. We placed our order and waited. And waited. And waited. Then, a guy walks past our table and trips on a chair (because they had the tables crammed so closely together) and falls on top of my sister, causing her to spill some of her water all over the table. The waiting continued. Finally, we flagged down what seemed like the only other employee there and asked if our food would be coming up soon, since we had been waiting quite awhile already. He came back with our order and we immediately asked for the check, since we were now running late for the movie. The food was fine, nothing special but the service there is horrible, slow and a little bit rude. There are so many other places to go downtown that I definately won't be going back to this place any time soon.

Awful

I've eaten here a handful of times and each visit has been worse then the previous time. I stopped going there after my last visit. I ordered the chicken philly sandwich which arrived as dry chicken on a bun. No onions, peppers, cheese or anything else listed on the menu. When I asked where the missing items were -- the waitress asked me what the problem was and what I wanted added. I said just what's listed on the menu. She brought me jarred mushrooms, onions and peppers and a piece of cheese. just awful.
