Best Asian food and sandwich in the city!October 26, 2007

This place has the best Asian food in the city. The "Vietnamese Sandwich" (that's the way I order it) is a delicious combination of flavors on fresh bread. The spring rolls have big tasty shrimp in a nice mixture of herbs. The cabbage salad with chicken is also awesome, and is a bit spicy due to the sauce/dressing. And the Pho. I've been addicted to the stuff since my first taste. Every time I go there I eat until I'm so full I'm in pain. But it's worth in.

This place was one of my favorite lunch spots, especially during the the winter. A nice steamy bowl of noodles and broth. Add in the bean sprouts, jalapenos, and asian basil and it's perfect. The interior is cafeteria-like, but the owner has tried to make it less so by adding some fake trees, changing the lighting, and playing classical music. Unfortunately though, the broth, which is the most important ingredient for pho, is inconsistent. Sometimes, the broth is brilliant. Just as often however, the broth is thin and flavorless. And, the price, $6.95 for a large, is higher than at some other local restaurants where the broth is never brilliant but is consistently good (Siam Cafe makes a fine bowl of pho). Other menu items are equally inconsistent. If the item is good (rice paper rolls for example), the size is smaller and price is higher than other establishments. The servers are mediocre; generally servers are strangely pierced, dyed, and dressed college students. Not really the type of people who seem overly concerned with hygiene and therefore not really the type of people I want handling my food. But, when the broth is on (good day), it's one of the most satisfying lunches you can buy in Cleveland.

I've been frequenting the two Superior and 31st Street Vietnamese restaurants for a few months trying to decide which one I like best. Well the results are in and I've decided that Superior Pho is, well, superior. The service is always fast and friendly and the food is consistently of the highest quality. The meat used in the Pho dishes is always tender, trimmed and delicious. The rice paper wraps are scrumptious. The Vietnamese French Bread sandwiches are crunchy and tasty (and cheap). Everything I have tried in my 10 or 15 visits has been superior. SUPERIOR PHO IS A LITTLE HARD TO FIND. This restaurant is around back of the building. There is a sign on the front of the building, but it is hidden by tree leaves in warmer weather. You can turn on to 31st Street to find a parking lot out back and a rear entrance. Or you can park out front and walk through the Just Like Mom's restaurant to get to Superior Pho.

The find was worth the search. An acquaintance told me about Pho Hoa, and said that this was the place to be. She said that it was a bit difficult to find, but great food. My search was complicated by the fact that these guys had to change their name recently due to a legal challenge. After I figured out that Superior Hoa is the new name, I settled in for a great Vietnamese meal. The atmosphere is very basic and low cost, the service is personal, the owner was very friendly, and the #3 Pho was great. I need to stop beck to try a sandwich. Another guy got one, and it looked great.

Pho Hoa is practically hidden out-of-sight but once you find it, you'll be rewarded with the best pho in Cleveland. Pho is the tasty Vietnamese noodle soup that comes in a variety of combinations. Also try the Banh Mi sandwiches, which are excellent here. Food here is actually better than the nearby #1 Pho, which has better ambiance, but both are good bets for healthy, tasty food at reasonable prices. Owner at Pho Hoa is friendly and proud of his quality food.

The place might be small and located in a small shopping plaza, but it should be considered one of the best kept secret in Cleveland. The place is clean and well kept, the food is EXCELLENT. If you want an authentic experience, this is the place to go. The price is very reasonable and the owner is extremely friendly.

If Vietnamese cuisine builds on contrasts that burst on the palate like a fireworks display - spicy chiles, crisp bean sprouts, crunchy peanuts, sweet carrot shreds and cool slivered cucumbers - then a meal at Pho Hoa is a taste explosion. Chopsticks and soup ladles wait ready; service is accommodating and successfully rapid, delivering soups steaming hot and chilled dishes at peak freshness. The pho (noodle soups) come in lush, rich beef broth with meat added in combinations like ""well-done brisket and round steak"" and prove both light and satisfying. Cabbage shrimp salad (goi tom) is perhaps best described as ""slaw gone glam."" Various appetizers, when teamed with a small pho and a beverage, become economical meal combos. More than a dozen flavors of bubble tea are available, including durian, the ""king of fruit."" The only subdued element of Pho Hoa is the space itself: The bare-tabled room is a bit spartan, but pleasant in clean shades of pale lavender and Chinese eggplant.
